Obviously, they all started out as just another part of my [wild] imagination. The crew started out much different that the way they are right now, though. There was no Commander Collins or Lieutenants Nakamura and Rigatos. No, my mind went a little crazy with fan fiction and produced Commander Molly O'Brian, who is the daughter of Chief Myles/Miles O'Brian and his wife, Keiko, who were on Star Trek: TNG and DS9. There was Lieutenant Lucas Bashir (yeah, I wanted to use the name "Lucas" so badly that when I made the new character I scavaged it) who was the imaginary child of Dr. Julian Bashir and Lieutenant Ezri Dax, from DS9. He was replaced by Damien Rigatos. And then there was Lieutenant Miral Paris, daughter of Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres of Star Trek: Voyager. As I said, I was going a bit crazy with the fan fic. Anyway, before I started writing I just decided to scrap those characters and write new ones.
Commander Collins was originally going to be older than Captain Pierce, with a husband and a kid or two, but then I just decided to make her a few years younger and more asexual than anything else. She might get a boyfriend, but only in my head. I can't write romance. Lieutenant Nakamura just kind of popped into my head one day and I decided to kick Miral out and put him in. And then I was still going to use Lieutenant Bashir (only I was going to give him a symbiont and a Trill last name) but I decided that because I took out the other two non-originals I might as well take him out, even though it's his parents who are non-original. Damien Rigatos kind of came in a few days before I wrote chapter two.
Oh, and I almost forgot, currently Lieutenant Sarin has two unnamed parents who will probably stay that way. If she ever mentions them, she might just say that she has a Vulcan mother and a human father. But, and this is still running around my head, originally I made her the product of my favorite Star Trek: Enterprise pairing, T' Pol and Trip! XD However, that would cause some issues with the time line, as Enterprise takes place about 240 years before my story. I suppose it would be possible to write them into the story using some sort of time travel plot, or say that either T' Pol and Trip or just Sarin were/was put into some sort of stasis or frozen in time somehow, but I don't think I'll do that. If I do, it seems so complicated that the whole story will probably be based around it. Just remember, I'm not planning on naming her parents, but T' Pol is a Vulcan and Trip is from Florida, so when/if she ever talks about her childhood and her parents, they're the ones I'm thinking of.
And now you have some new and useless knowledge. Have fun with it!
-----
Edit:
I forgot to mention, T' Pol has olive-ish skin (meaning that it's kind of dark, like Italian or Hispanic maybe) and Trip has paler skin. As I made note of in my prologue for Temperal Flux, Sarin has pale skin and dark hair. Sarin formed in my mind before I got the idea to make her their daughter, so to explain the way she looks to myself I say that she has T' Pol's hair and Trip's skin tone. I know that usually if one parent has darker skin than the other, the child normally has darker skin. But not always. My dad is half Italian and darker than my never-goes-into-the-sun-if-possible-and-therefore-stays-corpse-pale pale mother, and I'm just as pale as she is.

I'm cool:
